Welcome to ReadOnce.eu ("Service", "we", "us", "our"), operated by BiLOUD SRL (VAT: RO34723223, Registration No. J2015002244239), a company registered in Romania. By accessing or using our self-destructing encrypted notes service, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Service.

1. Service Description

ReadOnce.eu provides a free, anonymous, zero-knowledge encrypted messaging service that allows users to create private notes with optional file attachments that can be read only once before being permanently destroyed. The Service is designed with the following core principles:

• Zero-Knowledge Architecture: Notes and attached files are encrypted in your browser using AES-256-GCM encryption before being transmitted to our servers. The encryption key is embedded in the URL fragment (the part after the # symbol), which is never sent to our servers by web browsers. This means we have no technical ability to read, decrypt, or recover the content of any note or file.
• Self-Destruction: Each note is designed to be read only once. After the recipient reveals and reads the note, it is permanently deleted from our database along with all attached files. Notes that are not read within 7 days are automatically purged.
• File Attachments: Users may attach up to 10 files per note, with a maximum size of 50MB per file. All files are encrypted client-side with the same zero-knowledge encryption as the note text. File names and sizes are also encrypted — we cannot see what files you attach.
• No Registration Required: The Service does not require any account creation, login, email address, or personal information to use.

2. Acceptable Use

You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes. You shall not use ReadOnce.eu to:

• Transmit, distribute, or store material that violates any applicable local, national, or international law or regulation.
• Send threatening, harassing, defamatory, or abusive content.
• Distribute malware, phishing links, or any form of malicious content.
• Engage in any activity that could damage, disable, overburden, or impair the Service.
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any systems or networks connected to the Service.
• Use the Service for the transmission of unsolicited bulk communications (spam).
• Transmit content that infringes upon the intellectual property rights of any third party.
• Facilitate illegal transactions or activities, including but not limited to the exchange of illegal goods, services, or information.

While our zero-knowledge encryption architecture means we cannot monitor the content of notes, we reserve the right to cooperate with law enforcement authorities in accordance with applicable laws and to terminate access to the Service for users who violate these terms.

3. How the Encryption Works

Understanding our encryption model is important for your use of the Service:

1. Key Generation: When you create a note, your browser generates a cryptographically random 256-bit encryption key using the Web Crypto API.
2. Key Derivation: The raw key is processed through PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) with 100,000 iterations and a random 128-bit salt to produce the final AES-256 encryption key.
3. Encryption: Your note is encrypted using AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode), which provides both confidentiality and authenticity. A random 96-bit initialization vector (IV) is generated for each note.
4. Storage: Only the encrypted ciphertext, the IV, and the salt are transmitted to and stored on our servers. Attached files are stored as encrypted binary blobs on disk, with their file names and sizes also encrypted. The encryption key remains exclusively in the URL fragment.
5. Decryption: When the recipient opens the link, their browser extracts the key from the URL fragment, retrieves the encrypted data from our server, and decrypts the note and any attached files locally in their browser.

Important: The security of your note depends entirely on how you share the link. If the link is intercepted, the interceptor can read the note. We recommend sharing links through secure, trusted communication channels.

4. Data Retention and Destruction

• Notes and all attached files are permanently deleted from our database and disk storage the moment they are revealed by the recipient.
• Unread notes and their files are automatically purged after 7 days from creation.
• We do not create backups of note content or attached files.
• Once a note is destroyed, neither the text nor the files can be recovered by anyone, including us.
• We do not log or store the encryption keys, decrypted content, original file names, or URL fragments at any point.

5. No Warranty

The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without any warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. We specifically disclaim any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that:

• The Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free.
• The results obtained from the use of the Service will be accurate or reliable.
• Any errors in the Service will be corrected.
• The Service will meet your specific requirements.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, ReadOnce.eu and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses resulting from:

• Your use or inability to use the Service.
• Any unauthorized access to or use of our servers and/or any personal information stored therein.
• Any interruption or cessation of transmission to or from the Service.
• Any bugs, viruses, or the like that may be transmitted to or through the Service.
• Any loss or damage caused by the premature or unintended destruction of a note.

7. Intellectual Property

The ReadOnce.eu name, logo, and all related names, logos, product and service names, designs, and slogans are our property. You are granted no right or license to use any of these trademarks. The content you create and encrypt through the Service remains your own.

8. Service Availability

We strive to maintain the Service's availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part thereof) at any time, with or without notice. We shall not be liable to you or any third party for any modification, suspension, or discontinuation of the Service.

9. Rate Limiting and Abuse Prevention

To ensure fair usage and protect the Service from abuse, we may implement rate limiting or other technical measures. Excessive use that impacts the Service's availability for other users may result in temporary or permanent restriction of access.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless ReadOnce.eu and its operators from and against any and all claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your use of the Service or your violation of these Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Romania and the European Union. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts in Romania.

12. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting to this page. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes acceptance of the new Terms. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.

13. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. The invalid or unenforceable provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable.
